Sam Newman

Child, Adolescent & Young Adult Therapist

B.A. & M.S. in Art History
M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Current Student

I am passionate about creating a therapeutic space that feels welcoming and free to be our authentic selves. Too often film and television depict therapists as distant and very serious. My authentic self is engaged, animated, and loves embracing laughter.

My goal as a therapist is to help you find a sense of balance and clarity in your values. To do this, our conversations will focus on the language and meaning in the stories of your lived experience. Sometimes it can be difficult to find words that accurately convey our thoughts and feelings. I have over a decade of experience in arts programming so you’ll be welcome to communicate through other mediums in addition to talking. Drawing, writing, film, and music are just a few examples of creative expressions that we can explore.

In addition to pursuing an M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Northeastern Illinois University, I’ve spent much of my career working with youth and teens in non-profits and higher education. I’m also a former basketball and soccer athlete and familiar with the challenges that can come with that identity. When I’m not counseling, I’m usually reading, watching sports, or at the beach with my dogs, Steve Martin and Buster.

My Focus: Anxiety, Depression, Self-Esteem & Sports Psychology
